Queensland’s Natural Capital Emergency Plans

Queensland’s regional NRM organisations have each developed an Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan to safeguard biodiversity and agricultural natural capital assets.

Funded by the Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust, the plans establish proactive strategies to reduce the impact of disasters on vulnerable species, ecosystems and agricultural resources.

Queensland is a biodiversity hotspot, an agricultural powerhouse, and Australia’s most disaster-prone state.

With climate change increasing the frequency and intensity of natural disasters, these extreme events threaten agricultural productivity and the state’s unique flora and fauna.

For the first time, Queensland’s regional NRM organisations have developed comprehensive plans that integrate biodiversity and agricultural natural capital assets into all phases of disaster management.

Underpinned by stakeholder engagement activities, the regional-scale plans identify the most at-risk natural assets and detail measures to reduce disaster impact and enhance recovery. This will contribute to stronger local economies and healthier, more resilient ecosystems.

Regional NRM organisations, on the ground in more than 25 locations, are working with local communities, all levels of government, and regional stakeholders to strengthen emergency preparedness, response, and recovery efforts.
