Lower Burdekin cane growers improve Great Barrier Reef water quality
Cane growers in the Lower Burdekin are having a positive impact on water quality flowing to the Great Barrier Reef.

More than 100 cane growers have been engaged by regional NRM organisation NQ Dry Tropics to positively impact water quality flowing to the great barrier reef.

Through improved irrigation, nutrient and pesticide management and widespread practice change, four on-ground programs resulted in more than 49,000kg of dissolved inorganic nitrogen being prevented from impacting the Great Barrier Reef.

The Lower Burdekin Water Quality Program funded through the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, supported growers to adopt sustainable farming practices to reduce dissolved inorganic nitrogen and pesticides entering the Great Barrier Reef, while maintaining or improving profitability.
